Are Your Spider Senses Tingling?

Are Your Spider Senses Tingling?

Keri is back this week to share her insight on this months topic, Communication. Having two super hero obsessed twin boys she knows a thing or two about having super powers, or lack there of. -Andrea

Ah, wouldn’t it be wonderful if we could know what each other is thinking without having to say a word? Well, scratch that…I’m pretty sure I don’t want to actually know what everyone is thinking!

Perhaps it is a symptom of watching too many comic book movies with my twin boys, but sometimes I expect my husband and my kids to be mind-readers! When I write that out it seems obviously absurd, and yet, without actually communicating my expectations and desires, I assume they know what I want from them.

It’s a pattern that repeats … I have expectations … they go uncommunicated … my loved ones do not meet them … I feel disappointed.

Who is really at fault here?

Well, in the moment, it never feels like it is me! However, unless my family has developed mind-reading powers by being bitten by radioactive spiders, the responsibility to clearly communicate is mine!

Sound familiar? Do you have a hard time speaking up, voicing your opinion, and providing challenge to others for one of the following reasons?

  • You think they should already know what to do, and that they’ll do it.
  • You don’t want to bother or impose upon your loved ones.
  • You don’t want to “rock the boat” with people you care about.
  • You don’t want others to perceive you negatively.

I often fail to communicate.  Sadly, there are unintended consequences of my silence.

  • My loved ones are frustrated by my disappointment.
  • No one ends up having a good time.
  • My loved ones waste time and energy trying to guess what I want.
  • People stop trying because they feel like no matter what they do I am never happy.

Realizing that you are stuck in a cycle of poor communication can be discouraging, but there is light at the end of the tunnel! If you realize that your tendency is to hint at what you want or think people should know what you want, you can improve your situation by changing your behavior. (Check out our blog on Know Yourself to Lead Yourself to help you learn how to break these cycles!) Once you do, and you start communicating clearly with your loved ones, you might be surprised by how often you actually get your desired result! Yes, it really is that easy … and, no radio-active spiders required.
