Building Emotional Intelligence

Building Emotional Intelligence

Wondering where to start in 2021?

Growth happens when we add to our skillset, toolset, or mindset. To kickoff 2021, let’s focus on a critical skillset, emotional intelligence or quotient (EQ).

Here are the four key competencies of EQ:

Self-Awareness: How well do you know your strengths and weaknesses?

Self-Management: Can you build on to and leverage your strengths while navigating around avoidable pitfalls?

Social Awareness: Are you able to read others, identify, and understand their wants and needs?

Relationship Management: Can you engage thoughtfully with people to optimize your interactions?

Most people have a blind spot that can trip them up. Do you know what yours is? What would it be like for you if you figured it out and then never had to wrestle with it again?

Even if you are terrible at all four areas now, there is great news. These are skills that you can practice and improve immediately. Here’s my advice: Just because you can, doesn’t mean you should take them all on at the same time. Pick one to practice.

Especially in January, we are prone to jump head first into action with resolutions. All those self-management hacks for getting on top of your email, managing your calendar, losing weight, exercising, giving up alcohol for Dry January or any other resolution you can think of promise gratification and some bragging rights to achievement.

It is so tempting!  I get it, but I am asking you to resist…for now.

Let’s get some perspective. How many people actually take new years resolutions and turn them into habits? Of these, how many stick with them to make them their new normal?

To create lasting change, I encourage you to level up your Self-awareness first.  You are more likely to manage yourself successfully because you will have insights into what motivates YOU, and what will slow YOU down, or make YOU quit.

Do your future self a favor by being self-aware and making a plan that was made for all of you… the good, the bad and the ugly.

Emotional Intelligence 2.0 by Travis Bradberry and Jean Greaves is a great book for tactical and practical ways to level up your skills.
