What are the keys to success? What can fast track you on the way to achieving any goal? The answer, STP; Situation, Target, and Plan, the basics of project management. Think of each goal as a project, and put these steps in place and you will be on your way to success.
S is for Situation– This is our starting point but it isn’t always static. It can be constantly evolving but usually it is a slow moving process with clear inputs. As humans it is subject to bias. Our perspective can be limited- we know what we know, we know what we don’t know, but how big is the part of the universe that falls under “we don’t know what we don’t know”. Unfortunately this is our blind spot and can really derail us. Our perspective can also be clouded with aspirations and/or negative self-talk.
T is for Target– This is the goal you are shooting for. Most of us have something in mind- for our businesses, ourselves, our families. Unfortunately we usually start (and stop) here-crossing our fingers that we will magically arrive after taking one step. Keep going- awareness isn’t enough to get results. In addition to what you want to achieve, take it up a level and think about why.
P is for Plan– This is how we intend to bridge the gap between situation and target. Makes sense, right?. Plans can come in a variety of flavors. Depending on the circumstances they can be very detailed or very high level. Many paths can get you across the finish line- choose one that works for you.
Universally, the more you understand about the situation and the clarity you have about your target, the more likely you are to design a successful plan. You will successfully navigate obstacles. If you put some effort into understanding why you want the goal, you are much more likely to adjust the plan instead of giving up.
“If you plan the work, and work the plan, the plan will work.”
